Body Shop Gym – 3 Stars (and here’s why it’s not 5) Been training for decades - been to top tier gyms across the world and across the DR. I know what good looks like. Body Shop is probably the best-looking gym in the country. Great setup, solid machines, lots of classes, pool, steam bath, showers and even towels. And it charges like a luxury brand. But looks and price don’t mean much if the basics are broken. 1. Weight Area = Zero Discipline This is the heart of the gym, and it’s an absolute mess. Dumbbells scattered everywhere. Labels missing. Numbers mismatched. The squat/deadlift racks and leg press machines are left overloaded. No one unloads. You spend more time looking for a matching pair or cleaning up after strangers than actually training. And staff? Just walk by like it’s normal. It’s not. No one cares. It’s chaotic, inefficient, and honestly, embarrassing! Start by enforcing the most basic rule: return weights to the number it came from. It’s basic gym etiquette! I didn’t come here to play hide and seek or unload someone’s barbell graveyard. I’m here to train, and this is one area where things absolutely must be tight. Right now, it’s chaos. And it’s the most frustrating part of the whole gym. 2. Pool Booking = Decorative Feature There’s a system. Fancy. I book a lane. I show up. Someone’s in it. Sometimes it’s a random swimmer, sometimes it’s someone from the previous hour who just keeps going. Pool chairs? Claimed by people who aren’t even swimming. What’s the point of rules if no one enforces them? 3. The pool’s locker Room or Kindergarten? I don’t mind kids - but screaming, running, and treating the women’s locker room like a jungle gym? Not okay. This is an adult gym, not a zoo. Same goes for the pool, some days it’s chaos. Then the cleaning. Right when people are showering, buckets of soapy water dumped across the floor, mops and gear blocking the way, and loud singing like it’s a solo concert. Cleaning should be quiet, in sections, and not a flood simulation. Someone needs to show the team how to clean a public space while it’s in use. It’s a gym bathroom, not a car wash. 4. Parking = Tight Most people here drive SUVs, yet the indoor parking seems made for toy cars. I’ve literally had to crawl in through the passenger side more than once. Outside’s a bit better, but navigating between cars and hoping no one runs you over on the way to the elevator? That’s a daily hazard. For a premium gym, the parking setup is nonsense. 5. Pool Music = Instant Anxiety Whatever playlist is playing out there needs to change. It’s the opposite of relaxing. Could you hire someone who knows what ambient means, or just go spa-style coz it won’t hurt anyone. Anything but the current mess. 6. Management = hmmmm Front desk? Lovely. Polite, helpful. But email the management (as advised)? Nothing. No reply, no confirmation, total radio silence. You’ll get more engagement from a coconut. If you don’t want feedback, just say so. But ignoring paying members? That’s how you end up with public reviews instead of private emails. I like this gym and I want it to be five stars. Everything I’ve pointed out is fixable. What made me write this review isn’t the broken system, it’s the fact that no one listens. We pay for a premium space and experience, not chaos and silence. I’m not a chronic complainer, I’m a serious gym-goer, and I want to focus on training, not cleaning up after others or chasing missing weights. Fix the basics. Acknowledge your members. And I’ll be the first to update my rating. Until then - 3 “three” stars.
Best gym in SD. I travel 10 plus countries a year and luckily found this amazing gym here. Staff is great (Paola I think that is her name and the other gentlemen who helps upfront), even speak English. Everyone in gym is all about fitness which I love. Tons of great classes, all machines/free weights you would ever need and even recovery area like ice baths and recovery boots (highly recommend doing both many times a week).
The most complete center of fitness of the DR. This is one of the 5 gyms of this local chain with more than 30 years. In addition to this center, there are 2 more in Santo Domingo: Arroyo Hondo and Av. Sarasota, another in Santiago and one in Punta Cana. The building and machinery are first class, in addition to offering many additional facilities such as boxing, squat, body compact, yoya, pilates and a pool in Naco. They are innovative and keep up to date with the latest trends in the fitness world.
Easily my favorite gym to use when I am overseas. I love the layout, equipment and great service from the staff. A very clean place to get your workout.
