I was fortunate to have Dr. Carmen Rodriguez as my hematologist during a recent 8 day stay at the Bournigal Medical Clinic in Puerto Plata. The interest and care she showed was first class. You can tell that Dr. Rodriguez cares deeply about her profession and is truly a health care professional that is dedicated to her calling. I must go into more detail so you fully understand the difference my stay at the Bournigal Medical Clinic in Puerto Plata made for my wife and I. We have been coming to the Dominican Republic for 10 years and were seriously thinking about making a change to another Caribbean island, so we took a 10-day cruise out of the Dominican Republic in March to check out 8 southern islands, it was during this cruise that we both caught some kind of voodoo virus that caused my stay at the hospital upon our return to the Dominican Republic. The extraordinary care started pretty much immediately after arriving at emergency, within 10 minutes I was in a consult room taking to a doctor, 10 minutes later I was in a bed in emergency. Within 3 hours, I had a x-ray, ultrasound, ekg, blood work and a hematologist taking a blood sample and checking it in her lab, it was amazing. An hour later, I was in a beautiful private suite with an ocean view. The care I received from Dr. Rodriguez and everyone at the hospital, including the doctors, technicians, nurses, cleaning staff, meal staff, the gentleman who pushed me around in the wheelchair was incredible. I can not believe the high level of quality care that was received, it could not have been better. The end result is that we decided we would be out of our minds to even consider leaving the Dominican Republic to go to another island for the winters, we have top-notch medical care within 35 minutes of our home and if that wasn’t enough you have the larger cities of Santiago and Santo Domingo. If you are considering going to the Dominican Republic for a short vacation or a couple of months or to relocate there, DO NOT worry about health care, you are probably covered better than in your home country.
