Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando has three key factors working for it: Luxury, Location, Service. A doorman opens the entrance to this historical site for you and you instantly see the beauty and detail of the hotel. As you’re escorted to your room you pass the amazing pool and mojito bar, and terraces that sprawl. The rooms are large and the bathroom is spacious as well. For the Americans that love their AC you can crank it low and it works great. The location could not be better to walk to ANYTHING you need and want to see. Many restaurants, museums, and tours are available. One last touch for the hotel is they provide shuttle services to and from the airport in clean, spacious, and safe taxis.
Nicolas oviendo is a beautiful hotel with a great location in the Old city. It is very walkable to all the sights. The atmosphere is great. The hotel rooms are very nice with comfortable bed. Safe, minibar and frig, extensive cable TV including American channels,. Everything that you'd expect in a fine hotel. Breakfast is really good with a large selection of high quality foods. The only bad mark on breakfast was coffee service. Instead of leaving coffee pots out for self service, like all the other breakfast foods, the waitress walks around and does it for you. However she is never to be found.
I highly recommend this hotel to everyone traveling to Santo Domingo. I travel a lot and stay in many hotels, and this is one that truly impressed and amazed me. The location is perfect- right in the historic old town of Santo Domingo and yet it still offers convenient car access directly to the hotel entrance, which is a rare and valuable advantage. From the moment you enter, you can feel a sense of history. The hotel is like a unique blend of a museum and a botanical garden, beautifully designed and perfectly maintained. Every detail is carefully thought out, creating a truly special atmosphere. The staff are exceptionally professional, friendly, and helpful, making the entire stay even more enjoyable. The food is outstanding and exceeded all expectations. Without any doubt, this hotel deserves the highest recommendation.
From the moment we entered the hotel we were treated impeccably. Given 2 glasses of champagne while we waited for our room and also helped by a concierge with our luggage and valet parked. Front desk staff spoke Spanish and English, extremely friendly. Our room was simple with the view of the water. It's hard to find a bathtub on our 3 month travels so after just showers it was lovely to soak in a warm bath. There was a wedding party in the middle of the courtyard outside our door which was a little loud but music stopped at 11 and it was a beautiful wedding that we got to observe as outsiders. It rained for a our 1 night stay so kept ourselves busy with a few drinks and the pool table. The building and decor is absolutely incredible. We ate dinner in the bar and the wait was a little longer than expected..delicious hamburgers but the bun could have used a little toasting as it was a touch cold. The breakfast buffet included in the price was amazing. Something for everyone, fresh and plentiful. It was a wonderful stay in the middle of Santo Domingo in a historic site.
Parents deserve to know what happened to my family at this hotel. The room was constantly wet, muggy, and humid, no matter how cold we set the A/C. Our clothes felt damp, the air felt heavy, and it was obvious that moisture and insects were coming through the ventilation system. This unsafe environment attracted mosquitos and other bugs. While sleeping in this room, our 10-month-old baby was bitten multiple times on his face, arm, and hand. We woke up to see his body covered in bites. We were terrified. We had to rush our infant to emergency pediatric care, where the doctor told us the bites were likely from a spider or similar insect and prescribed anti-inflammatory and allergy medications. No parent should ever experience this, especially while staying at a hotel that claims to be safe and reputable. This was a completely preventable medical emergency caused by lack of proper fumigation, sanitation, and room maintenance. After returning to the hotel, the manager Ana Cepedes personally apologized and promised in front of multiple staff members that we would be refunded one night’s stay to our credit card. We trusted her. That trust was misplaced. After relocating to Hodelpa Santiago and staying there for over 10 days, we followed up repeatedly. Ms. Cepedes continued to assure us she was “working on the refund.” Despite numerous WhatsApp messages, the refund was never processed, and eventually she stopped responding altogether. This experience showed a complete lack of accountability, honesty, and care, especially after a child was harmed. The physical conditions were unsafe, and the management’s response afterward was deeply disappointing. Families deserve better. Based on what happened to us, I cannot recommend this hotel, especially to anyone traveling with children.
