Interesting history of gold, silver, and money in the history of Dominican Republic up until today. I can't read much Spanish, but it was still enjoyable. ID taken and returned on leaving. It can be a little tricky to understand procedures when entering--even if you do know a little Spanish.

The museum is really nice. If you want to purchase the banknotes or coins - you need to arrange an appointment in advance and fill in the customer form. But if you just want to visit the museum - no appointment is required. But be ready to explain your visit to the security officer and the reception person. And have your id with you!

Great display of their currency from day 1. Also if you collect coins/banknotes you can exchange for new ones. Take a copy if ID with you as they sign you in as a visitor. It's also free. The security guard was not going to allow me access as they had a few schools attending, but I stood my ground.

Numismatic and Philatelic Museum was established by Resolution of the Monetary Board in 1978 and opened in 1985 it is located in the Central Bank, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This musem consists of three rooms: 1-Numismatics Hall, which houses the museum of coins, banknotes and medals. 2- Philatelic room, which contains the collection of dominican stamps from 1865 to 1999 (over 100 years) 3- Temporary Exhibition Hall where exhibits are made to stay for a short time. The Board Numismatics shows the evolution of money from barter to the creation of the currency itself, through the stage of the commodity-money until modern means of payment such as credit card.
