It is, what it is. 20+ sellers trying to get your business. Best approach is be kind and respectful, let your legs be the final negotiation piece. They will go high on price and you go low, meet in the middle. Some are pushy but no thank you worked for me, some have fair prices ($6 usd for a souvenir shirt). I will pay that all day. The Gatorade at the resort was $7, can't complain about a $5 - $7 shirt. We agree, #50 Alexandria was really nice, caring to my kids, and very fair prices. We bought all our souvenirs from here for our family back home.
This is a place to get cheap souvenirs but the tshirts are seconds, so the printing is often crooked or marred in some way. Each vendor will hound you like crazy to go into their shop. The shops all smell so bad, some we had to leave before even looking around. The bracelets they sell you on the beach for 30 bucks are way cheaper there though so if that's what you're after it's worth the trip. If you're staying at the Royalton or Majestic or Bahia its very close by. You could walk or take a quick taxi ride usually for just a tip. I found shopping in DR really bad. They take you to specific stores that all sell the exact same crap. Nothing worth buying in my opinion.
Went here today, arranged a price but was then charged 11 dollers more than the price we agreed on, was going to go back but not now!!
All the one star reviewers should just man up! Learn how to operate and negotiate and go with whatever currency in cash that you use. If you do it right you will pay less than half of what you would pay in a hotel. It's a trip! Whatever you think you should pay is what you should offer and stick to your guns or walk out. Believe me they won't want you to leave.
We went there knowing that the sellers could be quite pushy but was shocked to find how aggressively they tried to get u to come view their little store. We did find that the lady vendors were more accepting of you telling them no thank you. However the men did make you feel pressured into having to buy something from them, to point where 1 of them actually came half way down the roadway to great is to make sure he was the 1st store we visited. They also try to up sell a lot of their products. You need to barter as aggressively as they are trying to sell to you. I would recommend going with a group of people if you do go, that way you might not feel quite so pressured. There is also a little coffee shop I think it was, unfortunately didn’t stop long enough to check it out as we were constantly being pestered by the vendors. Another good thing to know is that there is a chemist/pharmacy in the centre of the building for those essential medical needs.
