Long story short, this place is a tourist trap. I went here originally for the rum tasting and education. It seems like the teacher didn't know anything. He said that Jamaica is the first country to make rum, which is obviously false with a quick Google search. The teacher emphasized the darkness of the rum a lot when Oliver & Oliver rums are simply dyed to look darker. Also, the rums were extremely sweet. The teacher said that this is how Dominican rums are, but this is just false. Brugal and Barceló make excellent rums that aren't very sweet. Oliver & Oliver just makes young, low quality rums, puts a huge age statement like 25 years on the label, which is false, then heavily sweetens the rums to hide their actual qualities. Finally, a store employee tried hard to sell me on their most expensive rum, the E. León Jimenes 110 anniversary bottle. He said it's very good and it's not sweet. But I can easily Google, and I see that it's a cheap 10 year aged rum that reviewers criticize for being overly sweet. It's just a very pretty bottle and box for $240. They rely on tourists not knowing anything and just trusting them. Everything here costs 2x more than in the US and the staff will be very nice and pretend to be knowledgeable, but they just say whatever it takes to sell you overpriced junk. If you're still reading this review and want to experience a great rum tasting and learn about Dominican rum production, I recommend the distillery tour of Barceló.
Five stars for Taino Gifts! We did the chocolate-making class, and it was such a fun and memorable experience. Roody was amazing — so funny, energetic, and incredibly engaging. We learned a lot about chocolate, and getting to make our own chocolates and bring them home was such a great bonus. This was hands-down one of the highlights of our trip. I truly cannot recommend it enough!
Amazing trip. We did the rum and cigar tour and the care and attention the team gave was second to none. Rudy was very informative on the rum tour, and Edison was amazing with the cigars and providing recommendations and an extremely funny but helpful guide! Would recommend to anyone wanting to experience these tours!
Amazing experience. Unique products. Overpriced but worth it. Spend a lot of money, hopefully the quality is good as well.
Good souvenirs shopping if you don’t want shop on resort or airport. Our resort in Cap Cana had a shuttle (maybe paid by Taino) it took us to the shop and picked up back up. They have sunglasses, to coffee, painting, clothing, liquor and fridge magnets. Prices better than resort- comparable to airport. Some of the shop at blue mall had better prices but that will mean a taxi ride back to resort.
